Love is Like After the Rain Episode 12: After the Rain (Final Impression)

These last few episodes played out pretty much exactly as I had predicted. Our two main characters fall back in love with their passions and follow their dreams. They’re going to go their separate ways, and they’ll meet again. Probably. The ending left it a little ambiguous for fans so they could create their own theories and interpretations.

In the end, Akira has decided to go back to track and field. She most likely quit working at Garden and placed herself into rehab and is going to work her way to recovering so she could return to the team. The subject kept presenting itself to her when she had the career path paper to fill out, and Yuto asking Akira for help with running. Giving her wise words he learned from his father about never giving up, and with Kondo (kind of) giving her a little push, Akira made her decision. I say kind of because Akira mostly made the decision on her own, but Kondo sprinkled some great words of advice throughout the story so he was encouraging her without even knowing her full situation, which was last episode. In the end, she exchanges her own promise with Kondo, about…I’m not entirely sure?

After they complete their promises (finishing the novel, being part of her school’s team) they’ll meet up later in the future and: fall in love, date, marry, or just continue to be friends? The imagined embrace, which I’m pretty sure was Kondo’s perspective, makes it seem like he did fall in love with Akira and he meant that when they meet again, after maturing and accomplishing their goals, they can start a relationship?

So they both were in love with each other, I guess.

The ending itself was fine, but was lacking for me with some things. We got some flashback scenes of Akira and Haruka when they were younger, but I think those would have fit well in other episodes. The side characters ended up being pretty one dimensional. And the romance was never touched on ever again, which I’ll talk about in a bit. This ending was probably the best and only ending we could have gotten, so in that sense it did a great job but I felt like it lacked in execution.

Final Impression

After the Rain took a big shift in the second half. It had started with a taboo romance and made viewers curious how things were going to play out. I had admitted to being wary of the anime because of the premise, but had fallen for how mature and pure they were handling the subject matter. Akira’s girly happiness when she took another step further in forming a relationship with Kondo was adorable and made me smile, and I liked Kondo a lot because he never took advantage of Akira and took note of the taboo relationship. It wasn’t until the second half, when the show completely disregarded the romance and went for the “follow your dreams” plot, where it sort of started losing steam. The episodes still had a great quality to them, and I really did enjoy watching these two people get up and follow their dreams they had let go of. They both supported each other and encouraged the other, and they both shared a sweet friendship. What I think bothered me, and other people, was the romance disappearing. The episode with Kase mentioned Akira falling in love with Kondo because she latched on to him after her injury, making it seemed like she really wasn’t in love with him, and I agreed. I had thought in the finale, Akira would have gone over her feelings once more and realized that, yes, she did do just that. She could have admitted to Kondo that the only reason she had fallen for him was to keep herself from falling into a deeper depression. HOWEVER, in the end she really did fall in love with him because he was always there to encourage her and cared about her. That’s basically the reason why Kondo (probably) fell in love with Akira too.

The show started off as a romance, but finished as something else. I’m not saying I didn’t like the subject matter of the second half, because I enjoyed it, but when you present yourself to be a romance show, you should keep the romance in there. Giving the characters room to breathe and letting them build their friendship is a great thing, but leaving out the romance in the end throws it off for me. Unless their promise to each other in the end was romantic, but again it was pretty ambiguous. I think this is what is bothering me the most, but because of that “promise” in the end, I also felt the ending to be a little rushed.

Other issues were the side characters being a little boring and one note, because most of the screen time was spent on both Akira and Kondo. But, I liked Akira and Kondo’s characters, and their interactions with each other were sometimes so incredible and heartwarming. The apartment scene with the hug still lingers in my mind because of how amazing it was. Even with the plot switch, it was great to watch them help and encourage each other to follow their dreams. Kondo’s issues were incredibly realistic, and it shows no matter how old you are, and where you are in your life, you can still accomplish your dreams. His feelings of being old, how could anyone love me, how can someone like me write novels, I’m sure many people have those same issues, and it was great to see an anime touch on something like this! Having the spotlight on an older anime character is rare, and Kondo’s journey was a treat.

The animation and music were gorgeous and the direction was genius from beginning to end. It may not be perfect but I’m glad Wit Studio can make shows like these! I really liked this show a lot, particularly loving the first half more than the second. I felt like the second half lost a little bit of its quality and was rushing some scenes, but it was still a sweet little story of two people using their love for each other (romantically/platonically) to aid each other in difficult times, giving them the strength they needed and accepting them for who they are. It was a lot of fun to watch, and I wonder how their going to tackle the live action movie? :o

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho Episode 13: We’ll Go on Another Journey Someday (Final Impression)

The finale of the series is a emotion-packed, but sweet episode. Having their last days of fun in Antarctica before they would have to go home, Mari and the girls have their shaved ice, Shirase gets surrounded by penguins, and the entire crew play baseball together. Lots of emotions were felt through Gin and Shirase’s speeches at the farewell party, Shirase’s being especially beautiful as she described her then bitter feelings toward Antarctica, but has changed her views since and has understood the love her own mother had for this place further than the universe.

I have to say, I am amazed at Shirase’s journey. Of course going to Antarctica was a big deal, and was the physical journey, but her personal and emotional journey was amazing to see from start to end, and if you had to ask me who my favorite of the girls were, I would have to pick Shirase. Even though I love Mari, Hinata, and Yuzuki as well, but when I look at how far Shirase has come, I just feel like a proud mama! In the beginning of the show, she was a stern and ambitious girl that did things on her own. She hid a funny and awkward side to her personality, but she was very driven to achieve the things that she wanted, such as taking on all kinds of jobs and raising a million yen in three years in order to go to the place her mother was waiting for her. And she did that all on her own. She harbored emotions of denial and bitterness against her mother’s fate and Antarctica in general. Meeting Mari, Hinata, and Yuzuki, she learned to open herself up to others, even if it was a little hard at first. Once being the girl to do things on her own, she formed a group of friends who she cared so much about that she would never want to be separated from them. And finally coping with her mother’s death, she was finally able to properly grieve and take a new step into her life. Her cutting her hair is an important symbol in Asia signifying a new start in life, which is exactly what Shirase is ready to do. Smiling as she handed Gin her mother’s laptop, and smiling when receiving the message her mother had never been able to send shows her acceptance and confidence about herself. That confidence showed as she gave that wonderful speech to the crew. But, she’s still awkward as hell and that’s just fine. Looking back on her character development is such a treat, but of course that isn’t to say that the other girls didn’t have their own because they certainly did.

Antarctica made a huge impact on their lives. It gave them new perspectives on their lives and strengthened their friendship. They’ve enjoyed their journey so much, that they’ve all promised to return one day together. Mari had wanted to stay for the rest of the year, but things such as their school, their families, and Yuzuki’s drama are in the way, so plans for another trip would have to be much later. Mari made the most of her youth and found something she would continue to do in the future, Hinata has learned to depend on others, and Yuzuki has learned a little lesson in friendship. The journey has been nothing but positive for them all.

Final Impression

To me, this show isn’t just about making the journey to Antarctica. While that was the core of the series, there was so much more to it. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho was about friendship. It was about growth, it was about acceptance, it was about grief, denial, love, and pain. It took a realistic approach to the relationships and emotions among the characters that made the show so compelling. Watching the girls work hard and achieving their dreams and reaching a better part of their lives is also very motivational, and I have to admit that I always felt a little invigorated after watching an episode. It made me want to go out and do something in my life.

From the beginning, I knew exactly what Mari felt when she said that she felt like she wasn’t doing enough in her youth because I felt, and still feel, the same way. I also feel like I haven’t done much of anything in my life, and I feel a little worse because I’m in my 20’s. I want to do more, and after watching this show where these girls went out and beyond to get what they wanted, ignoring what people thought and said about them made me smile. Obviously, this anime hit close to home at times and it feels really important to me. There are other people that feel the same way, and I hope that those people felt as much motivation as I did to go out and do something. It can be tough, but the end result will probably be amazing. And as a female, it’s great that all of this was done my a mostly female cast, both young and older. I always have to mention Kanae and Gin, as they were just important as mentor figures and also as friends. I’m glad Gin was also able to cope and have a sense of closure as she formed a strong and positive bond with Shirase.

Another thing about this show that I have to mention are both the art and music. The scenic shots of Singapore, Australia, and Antarctica were breathtaking. Such gorgeous scenes kind of made me feel like I was there with them and I could understand what they felt when they were there. The insert songs were played quite a bit, but they weren’t overplayed or obnoxious. The soundtrack is memorable because it does what it needed to do, which was elevate the scene. And damn it it did because I would always have tears in my eyes when the songs would play, especially in the finale.

There are absolutely no negatives I can think of. It’s always a little nerve wracking watching an original show, because you don’t know how it’s going to play out and don’t know what to expect. Also, on Madhouse’s side, it’s not that easy to create such a perfect story in only 13 episodes, but that’s exactly what they managed to do. They completed the story perfectly, that a second season or a movie would be absolutely unnecessary. The characters have grown, they’ve done what they needed to do, and we know they’re going to always be friends and return to Antarctica someday. Shows like this one are hard to come by, and Madhouse’s execution is something to marvel at. I mean, this is why they’re my favorite animation studio. 9 times out of 10, I know to expect a great show from them. There’s nothing I would change about Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, and this has been my favorite show of the Winter season. I’m gonna look back on it with a smile and hope more stories like this can be made.

Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan Season 2 Episode 10( Guess whose back, back again)

“Guess who’s back, back again
Shady’s back, tell a friend
Guess who’s back..”

The shady and questionable brother is back again in the funniest episode of Saiki so far. I literally almost died. Instead of doing the normal summary, I just really want to talk about the moments I was crying in laughter. This is literally the funniest thing all week minus Waffles and Pancakes( a LINE webtoon comic). I’m crying over there. Let’s jump in.

The grandpa as a general character, he is so tsundere. He loves his grandchildren so much, but he hates the dad( for unknown reasons….was it mentioned in the first season or he just hates him for some reason). He just hangs up on the dad whenever he calls…

And when his grandsons call, he gets all lovey-dovey and he almost gets scammed by Kuusuke(Kuu), the older brother who tells him to bring 4 million yen( almost 40,000) to the train station( hey, hook me up with that 40,000. Going to college problems..).

Why tho????? Saiki thought something was suspicious, so he goes with him and sees that the brother is playing some tricks. The brother is just so sketchy…

When you say your not going to do a summary and your doing a summary anyway. God, why do I do this( don’t worry, I’m laughing right now).

Then Saiki and Kuu have a competition at the Summer Festival and Kuu wins in amazing victory using that laser. Lazerz!

Then another joke they have is that the festival is shoddy. Reminds me of the festival like thing that happens in our town every 3rd Thursday. It’s not even that it’s shoddy, basically overpriced vendors sell things and they close off the main road. And there is a bunch of homeless people( and I feel really bad).

Then Kuu decides to live in the town with his grandparents, and he decided to use the town as one of his experiments because he has no regard for human life. And he still hates Saiki alot. I forgot the reason he hates him so much in the first place. Maybe because he has powers.

He look like he about to get clapped.

When Saiki has to go visit him to give him a package, the package fall open and they find out his real plans( which are to kill him, by the way). And they are about to wreck him, so he starts running( insert to be continued meme)

Then the second part of the show is when Toritsuka, Mikoto and Saiki meet up together and realize they are all psychics, which is funny because now they know about each other and they combine their powers(I guess).

Toritsuka and Mikoto start fighting about who is the best psychic, and Saki just wants to f*&k out of there like he always tries. He didn’t even want to be in there in the first place. Mikoto just found him there and Toritsuka just saw them in there.

Toritsuka is a low life, but still my favorite character( Jirya from Naruto is my favorite character, just right before my man Shikimaru). He always looking for that a$$ and tites. And he even looked at Mikoto’s underwear. He’s just great comedy and that why I love him! Okay, don’t think I’m creepy(please).

Then that entire cockroach scene. Saiki and all the psychics are afraid of cockroaches

Then the manger just kills it, solving the problem and making him Saiki’s new sidekick according to Mikoto’s and Toritsuka’s competition rules. RIP the compeition, at least for now.

Me at the beginning of the show: Aww.. Dang it, I have to watch Saiki again. Again…

Me in the middle of show: ( in the middle of dying) I love this show, why did I ever not want to watch it…

Also another funny part. You were hit on? I almost died at that part.

Chance of finishing 10 chapter in the Saiki manga this week: 40%( there is bunch of things to do…the semester is almost over)

Chance of me watching the show next week: 99.3%

Pop Team Epic Episode 12( The Final Odyssey through this Giant Sh*tpost)[Final Impression]

Everyone was pumped for this ending! (Well at least I was.) I wanted to see how they ended this.

So they ended it with a bang, a literal bang and the figurative bang. The end was where they blew up the entire King Records, and the figurative bang is that they destroyed all the things that made this show happen( like the animation studio, the top 5 animes, the music studio, etc.)

Dang, it’s the Nilithy Farce!!

They also had 2 endings: one where Pipimi turns into a statue. They are clearly making fun of something, that I think I watched at some point. Ugh, I can’t think of what it is. In 2 months, I’ll figure out what it is..

Then Aoi Shota comes and says lets turn back time and fix this. I did not expect that part at all. I was literally like what? But then I had pause and to look up Aoi Shota. I really should have known she sang the theme song of the show because she sounded familiar.. I need to start getting the habit of looking up shows again and all the actors in the show and all the studios involved. I used to do that a lot. Ahh..

So the whole episode happens again except it’s the male voice actors and say weird stuff( like they do in the other episodes) And they are much ruder, which makes it even more funnier.

First, they have to figure out who has been putting them threw the dangerous skits of the show, so they basically kill everyone who has been in the skits.

The 5 masterminds at King Records send things their way( like the whole entire show) and finally the Hell Raisers, which they kill immediately. Then they go to the anime studio and kill everyone.

Then they finally make it to King Records and kill all the minions with Popuko as a machine gun. I almost died at that moment. I’m reminded of Upotte. Only watch for the cringe factor and the teacher getting shot every day        ( because that’s funny AF).

Then they fuse together like in Power Rangers ( or insert some other anime) and blow up everything. She looks so much like a Powerpuff right there. Do the Powerpuff girls fuse together? I don’t think so…

So anyways my thought on this show. Wow. I never seen anything like this except in dank memes or  YouTube poops or in anime cracks.( has to stop and watch an anime crack.) Okay I’m back. I can’t believe they did this. The basically killed(or blew up) everything that they have been making fun of and made them what they are. What a fitting and amazing end.

And Aoi Shota dancing to the theme song at the end, I didn’t know what to think. Is it cringy or cute? I have no clue. I couldn’t figure it out.

Also, who is that??? Que? I caught it as I was trying to find a decent spot to take a screenshot.

Also, I forgot about that beginning part where they did the retro game scene. I was like oh no because I’ve played a decent amount of old games. But I have no clue what game they were making fun of. I was thinking of those bad flash games where it’s like “Can you escape” or something. Ahh, memories. Also, go on a flash game site and play Raft Wars( you won’t regret this).

Does anyone remember that anime vine where this guy says this name and it’s like really long….( he has gray hair by the way). It’s a classic, but I just don’t remember where it’s from now. I just got reminded of that when I read Popsuke…

Somebody was talking about a season 2 because Hoshirro Girldrop has a season 2. I feel like they shouldn’t make a season 2 because I feel like it ended in a good spot. I don’t know about y’all, but it ended good for me. If they really want to make something else, they should make an OVA with just Girldrop. I would be totally down for that.

I almost forgot about Bob Team Epic. That was a gem. I just loved how the drawing got even more distorted over the episodes. My favorite one would be the one with the waiter and she sets a trap for him. Ah!

Also, lastly nobody put your boy in front of a burning building, but that’s okay. He is probably an arsonist. As soon he get home from his animation job, he probably starts throwing things in his grill to burn and he has this creepy smile. But he also has a girlfriend who is just as weird as him, so they throw stuff in the fire together as they look at the sunset. He’s probably just a normal guy who happens to be a pyromanic.( Okay, maybe he has no pyro tendencies at all. haha)

I love making up stories about a person I know little about. It makes me laugh.

Also that song in the middle of the show. I was crying over there. It sounded like one of those school songs, then it went downhill quickly.

Would I rewatch?  75% chance of just watching the 2nd part over.

Am I up for that season 2? I’ll watch it if it’s there.

Do I regret watching this mess? Nope.

Should I have watched the other shows that my other friend recommended to me months ago( she’s mad I never watched her shows)? Nope. Pop Team Epic was lit, my friends.

See you all next season!

Dangan Ronpa v3: Killing Harmony

Welcome back to the World of Dangan Ronpa. Monochrome mascots, pink blood, 16 students locked in a closed area and murder around every corner. In this new game we follow protagonist Kaede Akamatsu, the Ultimate Pianist  as she wakes up in a strange enclosed cage containing a school, dorms, and various ‘Ultimate’ labs.
They are being kept here by not just Monokuma, but also the monokubs. Monotaro, Monosuke, Monodam, Monokid and Monophanie. Who are apparently Monokuma’s children? Can robotic bears even have children? Who cares!?

In the prologue you go around and meet with the other Ultimate Students. This killing games roster of talents include. Ultimate Robot, Ultimate Supreme Leader, Ultimate Cosplayer, Ultimate Artist, Ultimate Entomologist, Ultimate “Mage” [Magiancian],Ultimate Astronaut, Ultimate Maid, Ultimate Anthropologist,Ultimate Child Caregiver, Ultimate Inventor, Ultimate Tennis Pro, Ultimate Detective and of course the Ultimate ???.

In the first chapter, Akamatsu teams up with the Ultimate Detective, Shuichi Saihara to try to find the ‘mastermind’ behind everything and investigate the mystery of why they are being kept locked up. Meanwhile, Monokuma introduces two motives to the group. The first motive, the “First blood perk.” meaning you could kill, own up for it, graduate, with no class trial involved. So basically, a get out of jail free card for the killer.
The second motive, a time limit. If there has been no killing in two days time, they will all perish. So with this, it becomes imperative that they find the mastermind quickly.  Saihara discovers a hidden door in the library and the two of them come up with a plan to monitor it with hidden camera’s and catch the mastermind…

If only things went that well.

And honestly, this is all I can really say about the game without spoilers because this game does not pull it’s punches. When it first came out in Japan, I made the grave mistake of thinking and saying “It’s only chapter one. How much can it spoil?”
I made the grave mistake of underestimating Kodaka. I will never be making this mistake again in any future games he is involved in. Also, another thing to be said, if you are here and are not going to make it past the picture of Monotaro because you want to avoid spoilers. I should note, that even by Dangan Ronpa standards the executions in this game are a little more brutal the the ones in the previous games. So if you liked the previous installments but struggled with watching the executions. That is something to note for V3.

With that being said as in my previous reviews of this game series, here’s a picture to distract you and let you leave if you want too before I start picking away at the spoilers. This time, check out this cool picture of Monotaro. Isn’t he a good boy?

Still with me? Good. So as the time limit approaches we see a group of the students head to the basement and then, the sensor goes off showing that the camera’s in the library have activated. Akamatsu and Saihara make their way to the basement and we find Rantaro Amami, the Ultimate ??? dead. This is unprecedented for a lot of reasons. First, this is the first game to kill the student with the unknown talent but also because Amami was featured heavily in the promotional materials and had a character design very reminiscent of Komaeda’s design from Super Dangan Ronpa 2. He was set up entirely as a red herring character and was made for the entire audience to think he was more important then he was. This was not the only deception from the promotional materials either though.

so at the end of chapter 1. We are left with the realization that all of the promotional material has duped us completely and that Akamatsu is not the protagonist but instead it’s Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Detective, which is both a good and a bad thing if you ask me. It’s interesting to have a detective as the main character as opposed to a support character like in Dangan Ronpa 1. However, it takes away the satisfaction of having a female protagonist in a main series game, something that a lot of the fandom was really excited for.
It was neat to have the character you were playing as up until this point be the killer though. With only a few omitted details of actions, you realize that you set up the entire murder for the most part…of course. If we are being blatant about spoilers by now, you know that Akamatsu did not kill anyone in fact and the mastermind was truly Amami’s killer but it doesn’t take away from the fact that she did set up a way to murder someone and had the intent.

I could sit here and reflect on my thoughts on every trial, but this review will probably be long enough as it is without that. So the story progresses from here in a very standard Dangan Ronpa manner. sometimes even more exaggerated then before, such as having a secret killer among the group. This time, there is two. Having the true talent of the Ultimate Child Caregiver be the Ultimate Assassin. Having the Anthropologist be a serial killer of women.
The standard chapter 3 double murder. Having the big bara sweetheart die in chapter 4. Chapter 5 be the death of one of the trial point trio and to top it all off. The inevitable tie in to the rest of the series and the reappearance of  everyone’s favorite psycho, Junko Enoshima.[though this time, through her #1 fangirl, our mastermind, the Ultimate Cosplayer. Tsumugi Shirogane.]

This is where the writing becomes questionable and the fandom splits down the middle on how they feel about it. v3, the v being the roman numeral 50 is the 53rd season of a popular reality show produced by Team Dangan Ronpa. It claims that all 3 games have been a part of this franchise and none of it from the Hope’s Peak saga to now was real.
You can take that at face value of course. The ‘never real’, ‘all a dream’, ‘all a tv show’ trope however is often viewed as poor writing. I can certainly see where Kodaka was going with it, he was making a commentary on not just his own series. The horror of writing a series about people killing one another and having thousands of people enjoying it. There is also some commentary to be said on what is expected from game sequels.

Oddly enough, I saw a post about the New Smash Brothers that reminded me of a lot of the points that v3 was trying to make. How fans want things to be the same, but different, but they don’t want anything changed and they want it the way it was in x game in the franchise.  That’s why v3 consisted of so many throwbacks and things that the fandom has come to expect.

However, true to the games ideas and nature of the idea of ‘Truth vs Lies’ in the after credits there is some doubt thrown in the idea that all of the series had been fictional. While v3 might have, the Hope’s Peak saga may of existed and it is ultimately left to the player to decide what they want to believe. What is the truth and what is the lie.
I think if in fact the Hope’s Peak saga was real, it puts a even more chilling social commentary on the narrative. How we dramatize and fictionalize real life tragedies, and how this fictionalizations can become more known then the truth of the situation and the tragedy itself. [Example: People not knowing that the Titanic was real when the movie came out.]

This may not of been the intention that Kodaka was going for. Honestly, in the end, v3 left a lot of fans of the series polarized about how they felt. Which can be both a good and bad thing, was it the best ending for the franchise? No. Was it worth playing and exploring the ideas and getting to enjoy the colorful cast that Kodaka laid out for us this time? Absolutely.
The writing was not perfect. It was ambitious, the game is collectively larger then the first two games combined and it was in production simultaneously with DR3 Future and Despair arcs. So the attention of the writers was drawn thin and both productions suffered.

What did not suffer though, was gameplay. For the most part, the trials functioned like the ones in the previous games however with slight improvements and new additions here and there. They certainly improved the Hangman’s gambit [Thank god], the logic dive was slightly easier this time around and other gameplay elements have been tweaked. However, by far the most popular addition to the trials was the scrum debates in which the cast is split down the middle and they have to argue their points against one another.

Outside of the main game there is plenty of side material as well. Of course, the standard school life mode [Salmon Mode], in which you can finish off the Free Time Events that you were unable to obtain in the main story and date the other members of the school.
There is also the board game mode, called the Talent Development plan which is pretty much the cross game non-despair AU the fandom has wanted for ages. You collect character cards through a gacha machine by getting coins in the other side bonus mode. A rpg style dungeon with Monokuma shaped Monsters.
The talent plan is fun and you get a lot of character interactions that are otherwise impossible. Such as Izuru Kamukura/Sakura Oogami or Kaito Momota/Mikan Tsumiki. Fair warning though, it may cause odd cross series crack shipping [please, can more people support Mukuro/Amami? It’s sooo good! Their interactions are so pure!]
Last but not least of the side material for the game is the casino. In which you can play various mini-games to get tokens where you can either buy gifts for your classmate or unlock the Ultimate prize. A key to the Love Hotel.

The love hotel event will trigger when you have a key and pick a character and you will visit them in a dream. In which you can see their ideal fantasy. It’s um, something, and considering how many coins it is to get a Love Hotel key it’s very unlikely you’re going to go through and get all of these unless you are collecting clips for youtube or are just extremely obsessive about completion.

In conclusion, while the writing is spotty in places and the plot is a mess the game is still very fun and I honestly think it is more then worth the time it takes to play it. The characters are fun and the gameplay makes for a good experience.
As for the ending, what is the truth? What is the lie? Was the entire series a reality show or was the tragedy real and it just faded into obscurity over time? I personally like to think it was the second one…but that’s just a theory…a…wait, best not get myself sued for copyright.
